  1. Illustration from page 2 of The Wonderful Wizard of Oz: A Gentle Retelling

Dorothy's Kansas home was gray: gray grass, gray house, gray sky. Only her dog, Toto, made her laugh. One day Uncle Henry shouted, "A cyclone is coming!" "Quick, Dorothy!" cried Aunt Em. "Run for the cellar!"

But where was Toto? Dorothy found him shivering under her bed and scooped him up. Too late! The floor tipped. The cyclone spun the house round and round, up and up!

  3. Illustration from page 4 of The Wonderful Wizard of Oz: A Gentle Retelling

The house flew on and on. Dorothy slept. Bump! She peeked out. No gray anywhere! Flowers! Fruit trees! A splashing brook! And two feet in silver shoes, poking out from beneath the house!
