A gentle retelling for listeners ages 3–5 of the Brothers Grimm tale “Snow-White and Rose-Red” (not the Snow White of the magic mirror and the seven dwarfs): two sisters named for their mother’s white and red rose trees let a gentle bear warm himself by their fire all winter, keep rescuing an ungrateful dwarf, and see the bear become a prince.

Rose-Red loved chasing butterflies in the fields. Snow-White was quieter and liked helping Mother at home. But they always went out hand in hand. “We will not leave each other,” said Snow-White. “Never so long as we live,” said Rose-Red.

The forest animals knew the sisters were kind. A hare hopped right up for a cabbage leaf. A deer munched grass close by, and up above, the birds sang and sang.
