  1. Illustration from page 2 of Neil Armstrong: A Journey to the Moon

As a boy in Ohio, Neil Armstrong built model airplanes, one after another. They were small enough to hold in his hands. He hoped to design real airplanes one day. For now, he could make models himself.

  2. Illustration from page 3 of Neil Armstrong: A Journey to the Moon

Neil’s family moved from town to town in Ohio. Wherever they lived, he kept reading. He brought books home from the library and read airplane magazines, too. Making models was one way to explore flight; reading was another.

  3. Illustration from page 4 of Neil Armstrong: A Journey to the Moon

At fifteen, Neil worked at jobs in Wapakoneta, Ohio. One job was in a drugstore. He saved his pay for flying lessons.
